Historic Hawai‘i Foundation
Helping People Preserve Historic Places
Preserving Hawai‘i’s Historic places for over 50 years.
For more than 50 years, Historic Hawai‘i Foundation (HHF) has worked to protect the historic buildings, structures, objects, sites, and districts that tell the stories of the history of Hawai‘i. As a statewide nonprofit organization, HHF champions the preservation of places that embody the Islands’ multilayered history, culture, and sense of identity.
HHF has a passion for place-based storytelling celebrating the communities, people, histories, and traditions that shape Hawai‘i’s built and cultural environments. Through education, advocacy, technical assistance, and the protection of and for historic places, HHF helps ensure that every era of Hawai‘i’s past remains a living and useful part of the present.
Founded in 1974 by community members determined to protect Hawai‘i’s irreplaceable heritage, HHF has become a leading voice for preservation in the Islands. The organization advances its mission by offering educational programs and resources, fostering a community ethic of stewardship, supporting sound preservation policies, and assisting individuals, organizations, and communities with preservation-related issues. HHF helps mobilize local energy and collective action to protect the essential character of Hawai‘i.
The goal: as awareness grows, communities are inspired to learn about, protect, and cherish the places they love. Historic sites and cultural landscapes are not simply reminders of the past, they are dynamic parts of daily life and invaluable gifts to pass on to future generations.
